Looking to update part of my system; I plan to do all 3 components over time, but right now I'm mulling over which to upgrade first, my CPU, my GPU or my hard drive. Based on my current specs, and the upgrades I plan to make, which one should I do first to see the biggest improvements? Also, if I'm totally off base with this plan, let me know.

Approximate Purchase Date: Soon, then later (see above)

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Mostly gaming, some other stuff.

Are you buying a monitor: No

Parts to Upgrade: CPU (to another AM3+ Chip, looking at FX8350), GPU (From a GTX670FTW to GTX970), Hard Drive (to SSD)

Do you need to buy OS: No

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Amazon, Newegg

Location: Chicago, IL

Parts Preferences: See above

Overclocking: Probably Not

SLI or Crossfire: No

Your Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080 now, 2560x1440 in the future.

Why Are You Upgrading: the Witness is running real chunky in spots- it's time to update a little. I don't have the money to do everything right now, and I'm planning on stringing this current build out for another year or two before doing a completely new build.

My current rig:

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3

CPU: AMD Athlon II X4 640 3.0GHz

CPU Cooler: Corsair H60

Ram: 16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz

GPU: EVGA Nvidia GTX670FTW (OC'd 670 chip on 680 PCB)

HDD: WD Blue 1TB (5400RPM)

Case: Corsair Carbide 300R windowed

PSU: Diablotek PHD750 (750W)

Thanks.

Solution
Either the CPU or an SSD first followed by the other as 2nd. That GPU is perfectly fine for now, I'd only bother switching it out once you actually change the monitor to 1440.

5400rpm hard drive to using an ssd, at least for main files and your os will be the cheapest upgrade, I got a 120gb on sale for £25, ~$35.

Best IMO would be the CPU. I had a 8350 till last week actually, not a bad piece of kit too and a lot cheaper than my i7.

Once you get the CPU and possible GPU upgrade after, then you can think of a new 2560x1440 is my suggestion
