are old mechanical keyboards better than the new ones?

Solution
quite simply it depends on your definition of better. the older keyboard make a satisfying click sound. the switch used under the key has a better tactile feel than a membrane keyboard. there are companies that still repair the old IBM mech keyboards. mechanical keyboards are generally much longer lived. it really depends on you. newer mechanical keyboards are available.

Besides missing lots of features that new keyboards pack, old keyboards are very durable, and will last you a very long time, if you don't mind their casual look with out fancy back lit keys and programmable keys.

If you buy refurbished one from ebay I would recommend cleaning it. I know quite few people that use them for daily gaming. The keys can get loud and may become obnoxious after a while. I use mechanical keyboard, I like how keys feel and how the keyboard feels and looks overall.

I would recommend trying one out.

Old mechanicals have a proven track record for being rock-solid and outliving the PCs they came with. The buckling spring mechanical switch on the old IBM Model M keyboard is really durable, and loud. Add in the metal backing that was tough enough to almost chop wood and you have a very survivable piece of hardware that can still be used on modern systems thanks to a few adapters and backwards-compatibility.

Modern mechanical switch keyboards don't have the years of real-world use to prove their reliability, but Cherry MX switches are given insanely hard testing that goes beyond the standard environment, so they can say with confidence that their product will work no matter how hot, cold, humid, or dry the environment is, and that you can hammer on it like the Hulk on speed for days without error or losing the 'feel' of the keys.

Old or new, with a modicum of care and selecting a quality brand, you can have a nice, solid keyboard that will remain useful long after the PC you bought it for is obsolete.

For all considering a keyboard. when you find a keyboard you love, buy a spare or two or three. I wish I bought 6.
my KB is no longer made and its got a kinda weird key layout but I am on my last spare and when it dies I will cry.
