Hi there,

Im trying to fix old windows xp computer 'emachines e525' it gives constant beep and screen is not working(partly looks redish)

I read on forum that it might be a ram problem, so I ordered two new ram modules. But still same problem.

What should I check next ? perhaps I could buy a vga cable which I can attach to tv to see if that works?

Regards

Your backlight is dead, i believe those screens used a FL-inverter or something, but basically backlight is dead, depending on the screen it can be easy enough to replace or sometimes requires whole new screen. Taking into account the age of the laptop it might not be worthed but it will be careless not to look into replacing the backlight.

Try going into bios it may give you name and version of the bios, also try to ascertain the motherboard name and model number, then google its warning beeps info. For example just say 2 beeps then pause and then 1 beep means graphics card. So note how beeps come across then this will give you the hint to the hardware fault.

thanks for your reply.

I managed to turn on laptop properly. It goes in windows xp but I can only see screen if I point flash light towards screen, it looks like its really dark and it doesn't have any 'brightness'. What's the problem?

so even if the backlight is dead it could give beep sound sometime?

is it easy to replace that backlight or I must replace whole screen?

I want to use this old pc in garage so if I attach to an external screen it would work ?

Replacing the backlight depends on the screen or make and model of the laptop and i am not that tech savvy when it comes to taking apart hardware. I admit never heard of backlight beep error code, but what you described is dead ringer for failed backlighting.

Thanks for reply.

Is there forum where someone tech savvy could tell me where exactly that backlight is based as I googled already.

It could be even cables faulty.

Once I turn on laptop it gives a flash with red colour and it starts beeping then after a few seconds it goes in windows xp.

I have used 2nd monitor with several XP's with not much effort. But I used both screens for more real estate to view. But you can use the plugged in one as primary along. It's just a selection process. Have you tried taking the battery out for a short time. Re-inserting it and then seeing what may happen? Jack ":-Dx

I'm not sure about the beep, however that definitely sounds like either the backlight blew out, or the inverter went bad. The same thing happened to my old Toshiba Satellite S2021, I could faintly see the screen if the lighting was right. Given that I do not yet have soldering skills, (I hope to change that soonish) I just opened the thing up, got the screen model number, got another of the same model from Ebay, switched them out and it worked again. *Knock on wood*
