How to set up a router as an extender

Solution

Generally, an 'extender' will give pretty crappy results. It has to talk in both directions at the same time. This will slow down the connection both ways.
And...

Are you looking for an extender, or an access point? There's a difference.

An extender is WiFi in both directions.
Main router --- WiFi --- other router/Extender ---WiFi --- PC

An Access point is wired, and then WiFi
Main router --- Cat5e --- other router/Access Point --- WiFi --- PC

And you need a router capable of that config.

If you put the extender on the other side of the house, it will get exactly the same crappy signal as a PC in that same place.
An extender would need to be in the middle somewhere, to get any (minor) benefit.

Have you considered a powerline solution, or MOCA (if the house is wored for coax).
