Does anyone know what could be causing these weird freezes?

I'm on an Acer Aspire v15 Nitro 15.6" laptop with Windows 8, and I've had it for about a year and two months now. I sent it in for repairs once a couple months ago, and it has been running fine since it was factory reset, but in the last week I've been having sporadic, random crashes.

What happens is one or both of two things; either the internet fully stops operating and I get disconnected from anything I'm connected to, or the entire system freezes, to the point where I can't open task manager. It doesn't fully freeze though, because I can still use my mouse and click between windows, but nothing will happen if I try to open a new tab or change songs on Spotify.

Restarting the PC doesn't accomplish much of anything, and virus scans turn up nothing at all. Given that it's a laptop I have connected to wifi at my college and such, so I'm wondering if it could be infected with a botnet or anything like that.

I did a search but couldn't find anything like my situation. I'm not looking for like someone to spend all their time troubleshooting this for me, but if you have any idea what could be causing it or if there's anything I could do (like reinstalling the OS or factory resetting) that'd be great.

I'd guess hard drive - might run Check Disk (takes forever, I normally do it overnight) go to the command prompt as ADMINISTRATOR and run the command CHKDSK /R /F it will probably come back and ask if you want to run it next time you boot, Yes, then reboot

Yeah, I've done several scans with that and Windows Defender, and nothing came up.

I just disabled some startup programs and restarted my PC, and the freezes are more infrequent now. I had one in the last few hours.

Do you think it's one of these programs that was causing it for the most part?

I checked those as well, and they are updated. Not sure what's going on at all anymore, certain games on my PC won't even startup now, but other games will. My entire Steam app is freezing and running delayed as well.

Could it be something to do with my RAM?
