Hey guys,

Here's my situation:

Laptop: Lenovo ThinkPad E540 with a mini PCI slot which is currently occupied by a wireless card.

Thinking about purchasing:

PE4H: http://www.amazon.com/Bplus-PE4H-EC2C-Express-Add--connector/dp/B00O1R6GWE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1454396054&sr=8-1&keywords=pe4h
Graphics card: Gigabyte GV-N730D5-2GI which by specs requires 300W of power.

My question is,will I be able to power this eGPU via a standard laptop DC adapter or will I have to purchase a separate PSU for it?

Regards!

Usb 2.0 with 30MB/s is far too low and you'll probably stutter like those old usb monitors resulting in less performance than your igpu. I'm not even sure it'll work anyways since usb won't work. Remember even with mpcie you are limited to x1 so will get less performance. With that in mind, I'd say to go with something more than just a 730 so it's not such a small increase. No one uses the pe4h anymore. You probably saw it in some online guide to egpus which are quite old. You can usually find other adapters for cheaper. I usually see people go with exp gdc which is around half the price at $50 instead of $95. Put that extra money saved to a better gpu.
