Is my internet speed good?

Speedtest says I have 753 Mbps down / 373 Mbps up. I found some pages on the internet saying that's good, but I think they might be old and internet speeds are getting faster all the time. Speedtest also says that it's "faster that 99% percent of US" but I know a lot of the US is rural and has really slow internet. So is that speed still good?

There you go. The connection to San Fran is still good and better than most in the US. The FCC just made it a law that "High Speed Internet" is considered 25Mb down. Most people in the US have that and lower.

Huh. Do you think Speedtest might be giving me the wrong results?

It's not just the single test, most of them are between 650 and 800. That much variation makes me suspicious though.

I was about to ask if you had Google Fiber and you just wanted to brag. I was going to give you the standard comment when someone announces they have GF.

You're at a university. You're going to have some of the best internet in the US. But, for a reliable test, choose a couple cities a few hundred miles away. That way you're making sure you leave your ISP's network. Inside an ISP network is always going to be faster than traversing across multiple providers.

This is part of the university LAN, or a commercial account?

Overall, yes...that is indeed "faster than 99%"

Good point. San Francisco gives me 54/16, New York gives me 236/69.

This is the Ethernet hookup in my dorm.

Right. So yes, typical for a good school or commercial LAN.
You can't compare this to residential commercial offerings.

But yes, that is quite good.
