Putting together my first rig this week on a Gigabyte Z170X Gaming 7 mobo and am stumped on whether I should get a standard 2.5" SSD or take advantage of one of the dual PCIe Gen3 x4 M.2 slots, which seems like something cutting edge and cool that I shouldn't waste. I understand that it shares one of the three PCIe slots that I could use for a third gfx card, but I will probably never miss that.

I actually haven't discovered a whole lot of comparisons between the two for real world experience (boot/shut down time, etc), but from what I have gathered, the improvements I will see in performance are completely undermined by the cost. This rig is intended for gaming and school work and will run Windows 10.

Solution
Unless you really need the speed that the 950 pro Nvme ssd offers, the 850 EVO is fine for normal usage and gaming.
You can choose to use the 2.5 inch 8560 EVO or the M.2 version. Both should saturate SATA3 bandwidth. With the M.2 its has a lower foot print in your case which is one advantage.

I nearly did get the 850 evo M.2 version, but I don't think it would function on the M.2 slot on my mobo which isn't SATA3 compatible. Am I wrong?
