Reasons for my choices:

As your primary use will be gaming, you do not need more than a top-end i5. An i7 provides next to no benefit for gaming. The i5-6600k performs almost exactly the same as the i7-6700k, and beats the old i7-4790k when set to the same clock speeds.

The money saved from this CPU choice is much better used to increase GPU horsepower, and with some smart choices in other components, I've been able to select 2x 980ti for your build, which will absolutely smash any game you throw at it in 1440p (Speaking from experience, a single 980ti is great for 1440p gaming, but definitely does not allow you to max everything out and stay above 60fps).

With your budget, I've also been able to fit in the ASUS RoG Swift PG278Q monitor - one the best gaming monitors on the market.

This is weird I almost never recommend waiting (you just keep waiting) but it really looks like at least Nvidia with pascal will be launching the 16nm GPU's 2nd quarter (march/April) this year. This is of course not confirmed so take it with some salt.

Either way I'm going to see what can be done with that budget right now

EDIT: never mind two good builds right above me

Something a little different. Why go Skylake when you can go Haswell-E.

Here's what I would suggest. I would heavily advise against using a Kraken X61 or any closed liquid loop - they're all pretty much the same model and they're known for issues.

I would go for this:

CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K 3.3GHz 6-Core Processor ($374.99 @ SuperBiiz)
CPU Cooler: CRYORIG H5 Universal 65.0 CFM CPU Cooler ($46.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: ASRock Fatal1ty X99X Killer/3.1 ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard ($303.98 @ Newegg)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR4-2400 Memory ($104.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($94.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Western Digital BLACK SERIES 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($114.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB Video Card ($649.99 @ B&H)
Case: NZXT H440 (Black/Red) ATX Mid Tower Case ($118.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Power Supply: EVGA 850W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($119.99 @ Amazon)

Alternately I'd suggest a micro ATX rig and I bumped the CPU up to a 5930K:

CPU: Intel Core i7-5930K 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor ($554.99 @ SuperBiiz)
CPU Cooler: CRYORIG H5 Universal 65.0 CFM CPU Cooler ($46.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: ASRock Fatal1ty X99M Killer Micro ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard ($203.98 @ Newegg)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR4-2400 Memory ($104.99 @ Amazon)

Then you can add whatever monitor, keyboard and mouse you want. I don't suggest those things because a lot of that is personal preference.

For 2K gaming the 980ti will crush it. Nothing better needed.
