How done is this drive

Solution

I use this program:

http://www.easeus.com/partition-manager/epm-free.html

Works excellently for cloning.

That said IMHO I would not clone that drive, I would back up the data somewhere and re-install windows on a new drive. If you clone it with those bad sectors you are potentially cloning corrupted data. Corrupt windows data is always a mess and you will NEVER fix it. Better off starting new.

Any number of things, was probably bad out of the box. Sometimes it can be from movement. Maybe it was dropped in shipping. Bad sectors spread like cockroaches.

Chances of it like dying right this second are unlikely, however every time you use it it WILL get worse. So how much of your data do you want to lose? Hence, turn it off now and wait until you are ready to back up..

Don't forget heat. Bad air flow allowing for higher than normal temps will cause drives to fail too.

Yes good point. The most mechanical part of your PC generates a lot of internal heat on its own, then additional heat from a bad enclosure etc, is a recipe for disaster.
