I have a Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 and I'm upgrading my GTX 760 and Phenom II x2 to a 980 ti and a FX 8350.

However, my BIOS version is F4 and according to http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2824383/cpu.html#xtor=EPR-8812 I need F9 or greater.

Now, when I went to http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3894#bios and tried to use their BIOS updating tool, I got an error saying that I needed a 64 bit version... which I can't seem to find on their website (at least, expressed).

I guess my question is if I'm looking in the wrong place or if this is something I'll need to contact the company for.
Also...at the top of that page, I see links saying "Rev 4.1, Rev 1.0 etc" and they each have their own BIOS versions... what are these for?

Also also... off topic, but... I don't really have a frame of reference for the motherboard I have. Is it old? If so, does it have compatibility problems with newer tech? (e.g., DDR3 Memory, newer graphics cards). If someone could give me a big picture on the quality of this motherboard, I'd be eternally grateful.

Any other tips would be appreciated as well.
Stuff like... "Don't use automatic BIOS updating tools... use a thumb drive instead"
or if there's some setup I need to do before using the updating tool. Perhaps I'm just not properly using it and that's why it keeps wanting to use a 32bit BIOS version.

Yes, 1st you need to find out which Mb you had, you can run the cpu z or open the case to check it out, like the one in the link http://www.mwave.com.au/images/400/ab50837_1.jpg you can see it is the rev4.0 ( upper left-hand corner) The go back gagibyte to down the right bios.
And you can use the Q-flash or @BIOS http://www.gigabyte.com/webpage/20/HowToReflashBIOS.html . I use the @BIOS. If you use @BIOS http://www.gigabyte.com/webpage/20/images/utiltiy_atbios_uefi.pdf , recommend to use the 2nd method : Update the BIOS without Using the Internet Update Function. 1st, download the BIOS into the USB drive; 2) install the @BIOS and run it; 3) click "Update BIOS from File", and following the instruction step by step to update the BIOS...
There are different revisions of that board, each with different capabilities. You can find the revision number in the lower-left corner of the board under where it says Designed in Taipei. You need to get the BIOS for that specific revision. Some are newer, so they don't have an F9 BIOS. Just get the newest one for your revision.

ASUS boards have an update utility in the BIOS itself. It's possible Gigabyte boards do too. You should save the BIOS update to a flash drive and see if there's a utility in the BIOS.

As far as the rest ... I would assume that it's a popular choice, as they have continued to make new revisions of it rather than moving to a different model. But I have no experience with it, so take that with a grain of salt.

After update the BIOS, boot the pc to make sure you do update to the new BIOS or not. You need boot into the BIOS to reset the BIOS setting first, because after the BIOS updated, all the setting will be at default. Then switch to the new cpu fx8350.
