External HDD suddenly empty. What can I do to recover data?

My HDD External WD is suddenly empty. It shows the message "This folder is empty" and looking at "properties" it really seems to be almost empty, but I haven't formated it, as far as I know. What could have happened? What can I do to recover data? Please, help me, I have a lot of important data in there, such as documents and family pictures and videos.

Hi there Valeria_SK,

Are you sure no one else have access to that drive?
I guess you can try the data recovery tool that techguy911 provided.

After that, it may be a good idea to run some antivirus/malware scans and test the drive with WD's Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool(both short and extended tests): http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=KGf1oN
