Im looking to upgrade my current system. A10 7700k, 2133ram, gtx 960, evga 550 watt psu, and gigabyte mini itx board. All in a cooler master elite 110. As you can tell its not the greatest but it gets the job done with a mix of low and medium settings.

My question is what should be my first upgrade(s). I currently have a 250 dollar limit maybe 300. The goal eventually is to be able to play any game at very high/ultra settings and achieve 60fps at 1080p.

Solution
They are pretty close. The A10-7700K is 3.4 GHz stock and the 860K is 3.7 GHz stock. The 860K may get a bit better OC because it doesn't have an iGPU sitting on the same piece of silicon generating heat (even at idle). I was just trying to give the best option for that platform.

Yes, you'd have to move to a new platform to totally eliminate bottleneck with a GTX 970. The AM3+ platform with the FX-8350 would work well with the GTX 970. But there may be no sense going to the older AM3+ platform if you decide to upgrade platforms; might as well go to Intel. Unless cost limits you, of course. If you decide to go to Intel, then you have to decide if you can do Skylake which would involve moving to DDR4 RAM, or if you want to stay with...

You may not be able to accomplish that on the FM2+ platform. But moving to the GTX 970 and the Athlon X4 860K (OC'ed) would be a possibility. But only if your 550W PSU is of decent quality with a strong +12V rail. There will be some CPU bottleneck.

I thought the 7700k and 860k were badically the same aside from the integrated geaphics. So if im understanding correctly my best bet would be to ditch the fm2 platform all together and go a different route?

If thats the case what cpu mobo combo would make the most sense? Intel 4460, 4960, amd 6300 8350.

I think skylake is to far off from my budget at this point. I am not opposed to going with intel though i have heard good things about the 4690k. Have also heard good things about the 4460. But as far as intel goes im clueless as what to get for my needs. Say i was to upgrade the cpu and mobo first and upgrade to a better gpu in the future what would be the best option?

I guess it will depend on your budget and where you live. The "K" processors are designed for OC'ing. They require a high end motherboard for OC'ing as well. If you are not the type that wants to OC, you can get by with a less expensive board and CPU.

So after a little research, and your input i think im going to go with a 4460, and mobo. Not into over clocking. Sell my current mobo cpu and gpu and get a 970. Thanks for ur help.
