OK, not saying this will ever happen, but if I wanted to store data that'd last a good 20+ years, what would be my best option? I understand discs tend to be better, but is there any storage device that'd allow read and write even after writing to it?

Solution
Blueray read/write is probably best, but that means you have to have an external blueray read/write drive, and be confident that you'll be able to find a system with a usb port in 20 years.
I think bluerays will still exist, as well as the infrastructure to play them.

1. Why?

2. 20 years with tech like that is actually a long time. Think back to 1996. What drives were we using then?
3.5" floppies? 500MB hard drives?
Do you currently have a PC or other device that could interface with those things? No.

There are archive level DVD's. But not cheap.

Your best bet is to simply save it, and move (rewrite) it to some new storage tech every few years.
I have some files that are that old. But they do NOT live on the original drive.

Like I said, this is just something I want to know just in case I ever have a situation where I really want or need something saved permanently. But I like your idea and the Blu-Ray R/W idea

Currently, the best solution is M-Disc Blu-ray. And of course, keep the data medium with the reader drive if you're planning on burying it (smartly, water-proof, vacuum-sealed, and pressure-resistant-enough container).
