Will a 390X perform more closely to 144hz at 1440p or 60hz at 4K?

I am gaming at 1440p with a 390x and am well aware of frame rates. BF4 will average out at 60 to 70 in multiplayer but regularly go into the 90s so you'll get some benefit there. You can also tweak the settings to get well into the hundreds with no discernible impact on image quality. It's a 1440p card for sure but it's more capable at 4k than many people realise if you are happy with 40fps average on modern titles. This is more to do with its high bandwidth (512 bit) which is much superior to nVidia maxwells bandwidth. On older titles it Will handle 4k easily. Going forward its not a 4k card By anyone's standards. I would go with 1440p.
