I really need help figuring out what happened with my first build, I'm worried I just bricked a $1,200 computer.

Hello,

I just competed my first PC build and I ran into an issue. The spec list is below. So I installed all of the parts into my case last night, but I only had 2 SATA data cables instead of the three needed to run the optical drive, and 2 HDs. As such I decided to connect only my SSD and Optical Drive to the motherboard/powersupply while I installed the OS (did a boot from Disk to install). Windows successfully installed and updated software. After which, shut down the computer and turned off the power supply. I then went and disconnected the Optical Drive since I didn't need it right at that moment, and swapped my SATA power and Datacables to my second HD (non SSD). From there I went to power back up the pc, but ran into an issue. Immediately after pressing the power button on the computer, all the components look like they get power (CPU Fan spins, monitor blinks on from sleep, etc.) for literally about 2 seconds, then everything shuts down again except for the front panel power led and the lan led (there may be more on, but that is all I can tell). I am unable to even get to a BIOS screen to switch where the system should boot from, etc.

I have no idea what happened between installing windows and trying to boot back up. The internet was not accessed, and I was wearing a static protection strap anytime I went into the system. I tried to disconnect disconnect all SATA devices one at a time, and eventually all together to see if that was the problem, but no such luck. The fans in the case spin up for a second, then slow down and stop all together.

Any idea what happened and what I can do to resolve it. Again this is my first build so I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do to even troubleshoot the issue.

Solution
Do the 24 prongs contain different voltages that power different aspects of the motherboard
Yup. The front panel LEDs are generally powered off 5V, as are the USB ports, and much of the other stuff is mixed between 3.3V and 5V.

CPU, GPU, and the RAM are all powered off 12V.

I tried to go to boot options, but again nothing appears on the screen for me to even try to enter the BIOS to change the boot options. Then I tried to reconnect the optical drive hoping I could see the bios and make that change, with no luck.

By the situation you explained it might be a ram issue because this happened to me couple times in my old build. Also i've seen too many posts and same solutions about it on facebook gamers group.
Try removing one ram stick at a time n trying both one at a time, and see if u can boot up. If not, go ahead and remove both and use any old ram sticks u have lying around or from a friend.

Okay, I'll try that after work. Just for reference here is the motherboard I am using, and I have plugged the 2 8gb ram sticks into the light grey slots as I believe I should have if I read the manual right.

Okay, so last night I took everything apart. after checking all my cables and stuff were securely in place and reseated the ram and still nothing. So I took out my PSU and used the testing cap thing they provide to put over the MB plug to see if that works. The fan spun up for about 10 seconds and then stopped spinning. There was no eco switch or anything no the PSU so I wasn't sure if the fan should stop at all or not.

I called the company and they said it sounded defective to me and are sending a replacement. My question though is this (since I'm wondering if anything else is wrong), if the MB plug did not function correctly, how could it power the front panel LEDs which obviously connect to the MB? Do the 24 prongs contain different voltages that power different aspects of the motherboard.....I'm sure that is a very beginner question, but again this is my first build and despite countless youtube videos, reading manuals, and such I still am not too proud to admit there is a lot I don't know.

Well hopefully this fixes it then. It's just strange that it worked fine while installing the OS, but then I powered down and when I started again no dice. Thank you for the response.
