dead ram need to know what is compatible

my desktop computer died last week i called a computer repair store and they said the four beeps my computer was making was because of bad ram so i pulled one stick out and it started but now it only has two gb of ram and is slow so i need help knowing what is compatible it was a 2x2 for 4gb of ram this is what the sticker on the ram says
2gb 1rx8 pc3-12800u-11-11-a1
i really need help to find new ram

Can you post the model number of the motherboard?

You should be OK with any DDR3-1600 RAM, though, as long as it's not laptop RAM.

If you've got a typical desktop motherboard, this is what I'd get: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231314

RAM is so cheap now; it's only ~$5 more to get 8GiB rather than 4GiB.

Use CPU-Z (free download) to identify the motherboard, unless Dell used some proprietary board that CPU-Z can't identify.

If it's a desktop and the existing RAM is PC3-12800, those sticks will definitely work, unless it's one of the really tiny ones and takes laptop RAM.

Best course of action: Go to manufacturer website and see if they have a list of compatible ram for that mbod. Most motherboards come with that info in the owners manual that comes with the board. If it was a dell that came with the board, then you should be able to contact their customer support and ask for that info. If all else fails, look at the type and speed, etc of the ones that you already have. Buy something that is the same. If you had PC3-12800, then Id get more of the same to play it safe. You can however, probably upgrade to a higher speed if you want too. Most motherboards, even if they done suypport the speed you get, will automatically revert to the lower speed that works.
