My ASUS M5A97 has a bad capacitor/ condenser and a non-working CMOS circuitry. It wont even load the BIOS. Obviously cuz it cant get any juice. With GPU, etc plugged in everything powers on though. But wont even begin loading BIOS for sure, USB ports at back also powerless.

I got all this info from my friend who was trying to repair it.

Is it even worth repairing even if it is possible? dont think it will be easy and cheap. I bought a new board, but my other friend is now insisting I give him the board so he can show it to someone else and get me more info on whats wrong with it.

Question still remains. Worth the repair or not?

I replaced it with a GA-970A-DS3P. (BIOS looks like puke in comparison to M5A97 xP )

Solution
I would never recommend fixing that................There are lots more capacitors and electrical items that are also getting close to the end of their life cycle. It will be nothing but a problem from now on. You would have to replace All of the capacitors and electrical items to possibly make it reliable.
No. That board can be bought for $80 at my local Fry's. I wouldn't trust it to last even if it was repaired (let alone possibly cause a fire or destroy your other components if not done properly), and only heaven knows what the repair cost would be at a local PC repair shop.

we live in a throw away society--if it doesnt work bin it

would depend--i had a high end graphics card with a failed capacitor

a friend of mine soldered on a new capacitor and the card worked perfectly for years--was still working when i eventually upgraded the card

he only charged me the cost for the capaacitor--a whole £0.60

without him my £200+ card would have been binned

Well it's fortunate that was a relatively simple fix and you had a friend who could do it. This guy's problem sound a little more involved than a single capacitor.

I almost junked my Logitech G27 steering wheel after it started losing centering ability. That was, before discovering the cause was one of the servo motor mounts that had come loose based on Logitech support forums (known issue w/the wheel over time). A simple tear down and reattach and tighten the screw with a touch of Loctite and it is still good as new!

But there comes a point where repair vs. expense vs. replacement comes to a head...just like when a car craps out.

Agree with the above post. If one capacitor is bad, others are likely not far behind. I have had to replace 5-6 caps in two different power supplies, one in a TV and another in a LCD computer monitor. They were all bulging and leaking. I did the repair myself, but would not have paid someone to do it.

If we can find the right person who can identify right problem and repair, then that is really incredible but there are so many dumb people try to repair and screw up everything

cant see why you wouldnt just give it to your friend and let him try to see what can be done--just tell him if it costs more than a few beers not to bother

in this country certainly so called repair experts just say you need a whole replacement part rather than diagnose and solder a cheap component on

whether thats down to lack of technical knowledge on their part or just a way of charging you more is a whole new debate

My other friend got the motherboard back. Even he exclaimed that the motherboard is "game over". He took it thinking that the guy previous to him was an idiot and did not know to repair shit which is false. When he realised the huge issue even his Engineer ass was dumbstruck. haha
