Sorry this test spans three subforums, hopefully this is fine.

Joshua-H61-uATX which came in an HP oem tower with 6GB of memory 1x4GB & 1x2GB. Recently the tower stopped displaying video, went through the usual list of issues with that. Got to the memory and swapped the dimms around, put them in separately. Finally saw that the pc booted properly with the 2GB stick alone, and only in the second slot.

Did a fresh install of windows with the 2GB dimm installed (windows 7 64bit). Powered down after updates and such, tried booting with the 4GB stick alone, no video, in either slot. Okay, the dimm is bad, right? Put the 2GB dimm in the first slot, no video boot. But in the second one it works. Okay, bad dimm and bad slot, right?

Ordered a single 8GB dimm kit of g skill. HP mobo page says the board supports 1GB, 2GB, 4GB & 8GB dimms. Put the 8GB dimm in the decidedly working slot, no video boot. WHAT. Switch back to the 2GB dimm, it works. Only difference in the memory is the latency. All dimms used were 1600mhz. Pull a 1600mhz 4GB g skill dimm off my shelf and toss it in to test, doesn't work either. Now I'm perplexed. Ideas? I've checked device manager to see that all drivers were up to date. Can't find info on a bios revision for this board either

Solution
Do you have the latest BIOS? If not get that, it's your best bet - HP isn't known for doing much for DRAM compatibility wise, they want you to buy upgrades from them, so best to try and match up with the settings used by the stick (4GB) they had in their or check if they have a compatibility list
