Using older RAM on newer laptop.

I'd like to use a stick of RAM from a broken laptop in one that works, but I've read that it isn't as simple as just inserting it. From what I understand a motherboard doesn't accept anything. The RAM comes from here (hm the sticker on the RAM has a different MHz value) and this is the receiving computer.

Let me know if more information is needed. If the RAM won't play nice what are the possible problems?

As per your ram question, the ram coming from the Toshiba Satellite A505 has ram
configured with 4GB DDR3 1066MHz (max 8GB)
which means it accepts DDR3 ram rated to operate at 1066MHz at 1.5v. The ram populating your HP Pavilion g6-2231dx is also rated to run with DDR3 ram and not DDR3L ram though can you confirm what frequency the populated ram in you HP Pavilion is on? Is it 1333MHz or 1600MHz?

I've found this to be the kit that will work on your unit and on that note I cannot advise you to run a mixed pair in your unit. It may show as 8GB's in your total system ram but in essence they will be two...

It may show as 8GB's in your total system ram but in essence they will be two different shoes. Sell them both and get a paired/matched kit to move on worry free with your ram upgrade.
