all you have to do is touch some metal before you start and you'll be fine.
wear some shoes on the carpet and don't drag your feet around while you build. i have never used on and have never had a problem. the inside of the case is a fine place to ground yourself.

This is not current flow . Its static electricity . What you have suggested is not useful and potentially very dangerous

static electricity discharges to ground, if you touch a bare piece of metal, say on a plastic table, it will not discharge the static build up in your body as the charge has nowhere to go but to an insulator, just like an unplugged computer. by plugging in the power supply, and only the power supply you are effectively grounding the entire case. you can now safely discharge the static in your body safely instead of through your video card. every power supply made this century will have an off switch. that should be off, but the cord should be attached to the mains/ground. or the entire excercise of discharge is for naught.
you picked up the electrons and if you do not dump them safely they will, unsafely.
when you can feel a static discharge it is 20x the power needed to kill circuitry. Lethal discharges cannot be felt by the human body, grounding is essential.
