I would like your suggestions for a new PC config as my current config is 13 years old now and has served me extremely well however it is time to give it a break. I will be using this PC for general web browsing, e-mail, word processing, watching movies and playing games such as Dota 2 and Fifa 16 (these 2 are the games I play most often), as well as a few more demanding games if possible. Won't be getting too many new games right now primarily because of lack of $$,a severely outdated system and also because I haven't been exposed to many game titles except the 2 primarily as my pc couldnt handle. I have no clue about overclocking but am aware of the risks such as frying parts etc. so I wont try to do it as I don't really need it for my kind of usage hence that can be left off the table.

Current Config:

Intel P4 2.4 GHz,
1Gb RAM
40Gb Hard disk
128Mb ATI Radeon graphics card (Got fried a long time ago)
CD ROM Drive(no longer works)
TDK CD-RW drive(no longer works)
Viewsonic 19" LCD monitor (model: VA1912w) - 1440x900 is the native resolution
Windows XP SP3 OS

Those are the specs I know of. I'm sorry if I've missed any other details. I didn't even know what all those figures meant till I read some of the posts here. This kind of customized and detailed building is totally new to me and I must admit most of it just goes over my head. Hence, I'm here asking for your help.

I am looking at a budget of around 35000-40000 Indian Rupees/ US$600 but I could stretch the budget just a bit more if your idea of a suitable config requires more money. I am not a hardcore gamer(except for the above mentioned games) nor an aspiring professional gamer, thus I just want to re-emphasise the point that a build capable of handling the above mentioned games effortlessly and also good for " general use" as mentioned above is all I need.

Do let me know about what you think of my current monitor and whether it needs changing although it seems to be working fine and is about 7-8 years old.

I read up quite a bit before posting this as I am quite confused about whether an i3 would suffice which would reduce by motherboard costs and help me get a better graphics or would it be safer to buy a better i5 processor so I can make it run for a long time as I am not in a position to constantly upgrade. For some reason the 4th gen i5 4690 is costlier than the 6th gen i5 6500 which just added to my confusion.

Also, if the graphics card can be skipped or if a lower cost one meets the requirements, do let me know as that would help me save quite a bit as I may have a lot of financial committments coming up soon so I don't want to risk going too far with this build.

If an SSD would be good as storage and for running games while skipping a HDD, that would work for me too but please let me know if that is suitable or not.

Most importantly, I will be purchasing my parts from www.amazon.in as that seems the most reasonable online retailer in India in terms of prices at the moment so if you could source the parts from there or if you are aware of better sites in terms of prices, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance for your help. Hope I've not made it too complicated and sorry for this being such a long post.

Instead of Amazon India you can try www.theitdepot.com. Just make sure Itdepot delivers to your location. Also paytm has some good offers going with cashback and all. If you are in Chennai you can visit Ritchie Street. there you would find the cost is much lesser than compared to the online stores.
Regarding the build I will try to pitch in later as I am currently in office :)

As for your monitor it is acceptable for now. I must let you know you will enjoy having a larger 16:9 1080p monitor but it is simply not in your budget at this time. The lower resolution of your monitor will make the iGPU built into the Intel CPU function under less stress. I would upgrade your video card before you consider a new monitor.

Thanks for both of your replies, JQB and darky.

I love the fact that you managed to suggest a build within 40k however, I'm a little unsure about the i3 and how long it would last me as I would prefer not having to spend a bomb in 2-3 years again on a new processor and then a motherboard that supports it so that leads my to my question.

What lead you to choose the i3 over an i5,say i5 6500, for example, is that a bad option or does it take the budget way too far and is an i5 something I wouldnt really need for my kind of use? I'm just trying to get an understanding before I buy it just to confirm that this purchase will perform well for the next 5 years at least.

If it's more future proof to go with an i5 build rather than an i3, would you be able to suggest a good i5 build within the same budget or how much more would the budget need to be increased for the same?

2] Is an SSD over a HDD a bad idea or is it really not worth sacrificing a HDD for a SSD? Any specific reason you went with the WD Blue over the other variants of WD and Seagate Barracuda drives?

3] Will the Zotac GTX 750 Ti help me play most newer games for atleast 3-4 years at my monitor's resolution or am I better of going for a higher tier card? Could you also let me know why you picked Zotac over the other manufacturers for the 750Ti? Many people seem to suggest EVGA or Asus. Would the GTX 950 be better as it is newer although it consumes more power?

Does the gtx 750Ti include a VGA adapter or do I need to buy that separately? My monitor only has a VGA port

I too want to experience 1080p but yea it's gonna go way over budget and more importantly this monitor has quite a bit of sentimental value for me which is why I'm not quite ready to switch it for another one anytime soon or till it decides it has had enough. So based on your post about the monitor, I'm guessing this card is as high as I should go for now as it would be sufficient to handle anything at above mid settings for another 5 years?

Looking forward to your answers. Thanks for the time you are taking to help me with this.

You can replace the i3 in my build design with say an i5-6500 or i5-6400. It will cause you to exceed your budget slightly but I think its still the best choice for you if you have the extra money.

You should be able to find the NVidia 750ti with a VGA (DSUB) output so you wouldn't need an adapter. If you can't find one with the VGA output you can find adapters for very low cost, in fact some video cards come with these adapters.

I think a HDD is the best idea, SSD's are expensive per GB. So If you get only an SSD you will have a much smaller storage capacity.

I picked WD for the HDD because it tends to be the least expensive 1TB 7200RPM HDD and WD is fairly high quality.
You would do equally well to pick a HDD from Seagate, HGST or Toshiba.

The NVidia GTX 950 is a much better card then then the 750ti and is designed to run games well at 1080p, it would have no trouble with the resolution of your monitor. My EVGA GTX 950 FTW does not have a VGA Port (DSUB) but it does have a DVI-D to VGA (DSUB) adapter.

The reason I didn't suggest the GTX 950 was because of the increased cost.
The Zotac was chosen because of its low cost. There is nothing wrong with the Zotac brand but if you're more comfortable with another brand like EVGA get it, just be prepared to pay a little more for the same GPU.

Thanks again for your reply. I think I'm almost set except for 3 more doubts.

1] Which of these 2 is a better choice: i3 6100 + gtx 950 or i5 6500 + gtx 750Ti? i5 6500 + gtx 950 would too much I guess? :D

Could you suggest a good option for the gtx 950?

I found these 2 zotac ones but I noticed a small price difference along with their frequency. Which of the two is better? Ignore this if you've found better ones from www.amazon.in.

2] The RAM you mentioned above isn't supported by the motherboard as it has a higher frequency, I believe. Is that right and if so, could you suggest an alternative 2x4gb 2133 Mhz option?

3] I'm worried about the PSU as I saw a comment from someone who purchased it saying they are facing current leak or something after purchasing that one either because the seller sold a faulty one or that product itself is not suitable. Any thoughts and alternatives?

I think it's better to go for the right setup in one go so I don't have to worry about any spending on this rig for the next 4-5 years at the minimum.

Looking forward to your reply.

The higher the GPU and Memory Frequency the faster the card.
If you can afford it obviously the i5-6500 and GTX 950 will yield the best results. I'd say you should get the i5-6500 now and install the GTX 950 when you are sure you can afford it.

I'm not sure what his/her problem was with the Seasonic power supply, but its unusual for that brand to have problems. Perhaps the user got a bad unit that should be sent back to the manufacturer for replacement under warranty.

Any DDR4-2133 Memory should be supported on that motherboard. DDR4 memory standard states that DDR4-2133 is the default speed. Can you give me a link to the place you found the memory support list? Perhaps I can help some more.

Cool, ill go with the i5 then however the problem with the ram you suggested earlier is that its a 2400Mhz one whereas the board supports 2133Mhz which is what I meant. Sorry about the lack of detail in my previous post. Did you intentionally suggest the 2400Mhz one as it will default to 2133Mhz which the board supports or its because there werent any 2133Mhz ones available? :) Could you suggest another suitable 2133Mhz ram maybe unless it's ok for me to stick with the 2400Mhz one? I cant seem to find any 2133Mhz 2x4gb types :/

Hey JQB45, sorry for the delay in my response. I would like to thank you for all your help in deciding the final build for me as I must admit I was starting to get a little carried away by the better, fancier parts that were always just a bit more money away but that would most likely have made me blow my budget.

Although, I must admit it's quite painful to be spending almost as much on the PSU as the motherboard as I thought a 2-3k PSU might do the job too. Still open to being suggested to the next cheaper option if possible in that regard :p

Potential final build:

Processor - i5 6500
Mobo - Gigabyte H110 as u suggested above
RAM - 2 x4GB G.Skill Ripjaws V 2133Mhz as I dont see a point in spending for a higher frequency than the board can support as I have no plan to overclock it either
Graphics - Zotac 750Ti 2GB
HDD - 1TB Seagate Barracuda as I cant see to find the WD Blue anywhere within reach :/
Case- Corsair Carbide 200R
PSU - Seasonic SS-520GM Bronze ( Is anything else considerable within Seasonic? :D)

Total - 48,000 Approx

an i5 6500+ gtx 750 ti is going to cost you near as dammit the same as an i3 6100+gtx 950.

to me personally the i3 6100+gtx 950 is by far the better combination on your relatively tight budget mate.

& honestly for either of those combinations the antec vp500 is to me personally absolutely good enough on both a quality & power front. No its ultimately not as good quality as any seasonic but its decent enough & nearly half the price which on a tight budget can make all the difference
