Hi Guys,

I need to upgrade my old CPU and motherboard. My i7 870 OC to 3.89 Ghz and ASUS board need upgrading.

From my old set up I will be keeping my my GPU MSI R9 290X, 8 GB DDR3, old mechanical 1 TB drive, Cooler Master 212 Evo, 850W PSU and Zalaman Z9 Plus Case.

I am hesitating between these two bundles:

https://www.scan.co.uk/products/intel-quad-core-i7-4790k-processor-plus-msi-z97-gaming-5-motherboard-bundle - cost 377.00
MSI Z97 GAMING 5 Motherboard + Intel i7 4790K CPU Bundle

or

http://www.dabs.com/products/intel-core-i7-6700k-unlocked-4-00ghz-6th-gen-skylake-cpu-socket1151-quad-core-4ghz-4-2ghz-turbo-bx80662i76700k-BH1Y.html - Cost 438.02

Bundle deal on Intel Core i7-6700K Unlocked 4.00GHz 6th Gen Skylake CPU Socket1151 Quad Core 4GHz/4.2GHz turbo

I will also buy 250GB Samsung SSD for the system.

I will be using this set up mainly for gaming. Is it worth to pay extra £60.00 for i7 6700k. Will my DDR3 work with this motherboard and will Cooler Fit? Or is it better to keep £60 and go for 4790k? I would like my refreshed rig to last for at least 4 years.

Please help. Many thanks !

^ I second that. Generally speaking getting newer tech is the way to go.

I also may be slightly biased because I have the same board but the Gaming 3 edition. Go for it!

Are you planning on getting one of the new Pro 950 M.2 drives? If not, I would highly recommend (I also have one)!

Edit:

You'll need to get new RAM, but DDR4 prices are pretty low now so it shouldn't cost much.

Your CPU cooler is compatible with LGA1151 boards, so you'll be able to re-use it.

i7 6700k and i7 4790k are not that different in term of performance. Nothing you can notice without benchmark programs. Even on games, you will perhaps see very little fps difference.
However, Skylake's mobo (Z170/H170) is more interesting, e.g. DDR4 support. (you must buy DDR4 RAM)
I would pick Skylake, if I were you.

Thanks a lot ! I have decided to buy Skylake CPU and MSI Z170A Gaming M5 mobo. I have bought this RAM

http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/memory-pc/ddr4memory/ddr4pc4-256003200mhz/G.Skill/F4-3200C16D-16GTZB.html?gclid=CO-3yvSx48oCFaUIwwodzA0H4Q#utm_source=google&utm_medium=base&utm_campaign=products

Could you please help with one more thing. On the mobo spec it says that it supports Bus Clock2400 MHz, 2133 MHz, 2800 MHz (O.C.), 2600 MHz (O.C.), 3000 MHz (O.C.), 3200 MHz (O.C.), 3600 MHz (O.C.).

it says on the spec that it supports 3200 OC if my Trident Z Ram is 3200 Mhz native does it mean that my mobo will downclock it to 2400 Mhz and I will have to change settigns in BIOS or will it work at RAM's 3200 MHz?

Many thanks !

Yes it will operate at the native speed of the motherboard. You can of course overclock your RAM but you won't really notice a difference in performance, so it probably best just to leave at the lower speed.

Very cool choices and purchases Karmazyn. After you get it all together...
-Which storage configuration did you chose, i.e. M.2, SSD, HDD, RAID?
-Which CPU cooler did you choose?
-Any heartache with installing OS?
Cheers

Thanks !
- For storage - I have purchased 250 GB SSD Samsung EVO 850 [for the system and 1,3 games] I will pair it with my old 1TB mechanical drive. In 1 year time I will get 850 GBP SSD drive and M.2.
-CPU cooler - I will be reusing my Cooler Master 212 EVO. In a year time I will think about upgrading to water cooler. Corsair H80i perhaps.(unless you have any tips for good water cooling solution)
- I will be putting everything together next week. I hope it will go smoothly.

Thanks for your help ! It was down to future proofing this build a little bit. In 2 years time I will add another R9 290X or just get new card, depending on the benchmark scores of R9 290X (x2) vs any new thing on the market.

Cant wait for the parts to arrive.

Best value choices that will work great for all gaming.
-I intend to buy the same Samsung SSD with tax money. All good to wait on M.2. with its premium price. Us gamers just don't use anything near 1000MB read/write from PCIe Gen 3.0.
-CPU cooler, airflow is for me, quieter is better. For enthusiasts who overclock then watercooling is worth the increased price, risk and noise. Now for big money (presume $500) and crazy enthusiasm (12 hours) a techie could set up a watercoolor kit with acrylic tubing and colored coolent - wow!
-In two years time it is my wonder if I'll SLI my GTX970, hmmm.
Enjoy the new rig.
