DDR4 RAM underclocked and in separate channels

Hello all i just recently built a new system comprising of the following;

- i5 6600k
- MSI Krait z170 mobo
- Corsair vengence DDR4 2666 (2x4gb)
- Gigabyte GTX 980
- SSD HDD ECT ECT....

So for starters according to Corsair and MSI the RAM is compatible with each other.

Anyway the problem im facing now (after hours of DRAM and CPU/VGA board errors, debug lights will be the death of me i swear) is that the ram i have installed is underclocked in the BIOS to 2133mhz and is sitting in separate channels ( 1x is in chan 1 slot 3, the other is in chan 2 slot 4).
The system is running atm and appears to notice all the ram however my issue is that when i go into the BIOS to change the ram speed to 2666 the system reboots, fails then resets back to the 2133 setting. Also the ram being used any other slot in any imaginable configuration the system does not read it.

Furthermore is this an issue?
Am i loosing performance (apart from the obvious mhz downgrade)?
Is the RAM or Mobo the issue (ie, dead sticks or faulty slots)?
Should i change RAM to a higher mhz or brand?
Anything i've missed?

Thanks heaps in advance

Solution
If the DRAM won't work in either slot 1 or 2 from CPU, might try loosening the CPU cooler then snug it down, if too tight in a corner or side it can throw the MC off from the CPU not being level and having full contact with all pins. Next check the CPU pins, if no problems with either, you prob have a bad channel on the mobo - though it may be the CPUs MC

You'll want to place the ram modules in the same colored slots (both in black slots according to motherboard manual page 28). You'll also want to enable XMP (in BIOS Advanced mode - manual page 43) to get the ram above the default value of 2133MHz
c12friedman thanks for your response however, i cannot place the ram in the same colored modules as if i do that the pc will not boot, i can only achieve this if i only have one stick connected and as soon as i add the other the system wont boot. So should i add one stick apply the settings you recommend then add the other and hope for the best?

Was the ram purchased as a dual channel kit and not individual identical sticks? If so, try them in the white slots, if no dual channel function then, I would figure either the ram is funky and not performing properly, you'd want to contact Corsair in that case. If the ram was purchased individually then, well, no telling what the ram will do when paired with another and no guarantee of dual channel operation.

Another possibility is you have bent pins on the motherboard (you'd need to pull the CPU and replace thermal compound afterwards to check that) and bent pins can get tricky since, in many cases, manufacturers are quick to conclude "user induced damage". In some cases it's easier to attempt to bend them back (I won't recommend it nor go into how-to here), it's an option you may want to look into if you do find bent pins and MSI doesn't choose to be helpful.
