Hey. So I am looking for good CPU for 3d modeling / rendering purposes, mainly ArchiCAD and 3DS max, and some other Adobe software (Illustrator, Photoshop etc)
My budget is 300-400€.

Can you guys recommend a few? I was told i7 5820k, 5930k are great, but they're slightly above my budget. I was looking at this i7 4790k but I don't know how it deals with rendering tasks. Some suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

A 4790K will be a good CPU choice. 8 threads at a good clock speed. Pair it with a good cooler and Z97 board and OC it for the desired extra performance. A large SSD primary will also work wonders for modeling and rendering.

Don't forget the GPU. For purely rendering you'll want a proper workstation level card (Quadro or Fire).

Many will stretch to the 6700K, but it has a known crunch computing issue and they're still updating firmwares, etc... I'd leave that one for now.

Some say I should go for Xeon E5 2620 and that I should avoid Z series for heavy computing. It's really confusing hearing so many different opinions. I mean...different opinions are great, don't get me wrong, but it makes really difficult to decide :)

I don't have money for Quadro, so I guess I'll go for r9 390 gtx 970.

Honestly, the need for the "trusted computing" or "ECC" RAM is almost a moot point nowadays for anything but pure server use.

I've done SolidWorks designing on my 4790K with my old 7870 Tahiti and it blasted through the design work. The CPU in this case won't be the hold up unless you're doing industrial/consulting style rendering. Even then, as you mentioned, the 2011-V3 series CPUs charge a crazy premium.

As for GPU, you should be able to find a FirePro W5100 for the same price as the GTX 970. As a gamer, I don't mind using my gaming card. Just not as good at crunching renders or adding the "pretty" textures to the in process model. Performance wise it worked fine for small to medium assemblies.

Guess I should add I spent over 10 years as a SW admin. Doesn't make me a genius by any means, but I know how to troubleshoot CAD systems. My home i7/7870 beat any work machine I've used to date. Only exception being the simulation builds. Those get a bit crazy.
