Hi Everyone!

I currently have an AMD fx 8320 cpu, amd stock fan cooler and i just got an evga 980 ti ftw. I am planning to upgrade my cpu as people have said that it may bottleneck my gpu. Upgrading stock amd fan is a no brainer for the 980 ti. I plan to use this for everyday gaming on high settings and possibly ultra on 1080p and possibly 1440p. No 4K yet. Can anyone recommend an intel cpu I could switch to and possibly a mobo to go with it?
Would air cooling for this setup be sufficient? If so, what air coolers would you recommend?

Thank you.

Hard to say,4.5ghz is doable, but it depends on the cpu, motherboard as well.,sometimes you win the chip lottery and other times not.

Looking at your budget is the 4790K also an option, for most games not necessary, but some games do show improvement with the 8 threads.

What kind of monitor is used? As said might he 8320 overclocked be enough for some good fps at 1080p.Depends on the motherboard as well, overclocking that is.

For a 4790K partslist,

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor (£269.98 @ Amazon UK)
CPU Cooler: Scythe Kotetsu 79.0 CFM CPU Cooler (£24.70 @ Amazon UK)
Motherboard: Asus Z97-AR ATX LGA1150...

Probably less than £400 on the CPU and less than £110 on the cooler

Noctua nh-d15s cooler better than hyper 212 Evo if I plan on over clocking to play on max settings?
Is an i5 6600k any better or different from the 4690k? I only ask b/c its cheaper and very similar

With the 4690K you can reuse the ram you have now, with the 6600K is it recommended to get ddr4 ram as well which adds to the budget. You could sell the current ram of course, but for the performance is the 4690K still a good cpu.

I see. To what extent can you over clock the 4690k?

The 4690K would leave some money in the pocket,

could be spend elsewhere, maybe an even better cooler or maybe case or just not spend it at all.:)

I use a BenQ XL2411T monitor and I currently have an Asus M5A97 R2.0 motherboard. I understand that I'll most likely need to upgrade my motherboard If I wish to overclock an intel 4790k (since this is an AMD motherboard anyway).
Would these motherboards be any good:

Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming 3
Asus Z170 PRO

Or would they just be extra costs and have no significant impact on overclocking capabilities and otherwise overall gaming?

ah okay, why would my cpu be able to manage ultra 1080p? Would I still have to upgrade my mobo (Asus M5A97 R2.0) and cooler (Stock AMD fan) to do so?

A 144hrz monitor which can display more than the normal 60fps and would an upgrade of the cpu be nice imo.

You would indeed need an intel chipset based motherboard to overclock the 4790K.I was talking about the 8320 and you should be able to overclock that one on this motherboard, but i can only guess to what extend. That just trial and error.
With a 60hrz monitor would the cpu probably give enough fps to say keep it for a while, but with the monitor used would you want to have all the performance you can get.

These motherboards, socket 1151,will only work with the i5 6600K which i already explained would be better of with ddr4,it would work with ddr3L ram,but the "L" stands for "low voltage" which your current ram probably not is.For the 4790K or a 4690K would you need to look at motherboards with the Z97 chipset/socket 1150.

Ah I understand now. Thank you for clarifying things here
