Help me out; currently i have one computer that's providing all my entertainment needs and more but it's crapping out so i'm open to options. With the pc, i have OFFline single player games which are free, i stream, download and watch my tv shows and movies on vlc player, again for free; plus, with google voice, i have a free telephone. So, i'm left with either spending $800+ for a new pc or else use my old slow computer to compute and buy a game console to play games. I hear that with certain consoles, i could put a flash drive full of downloaded tv shows in and play them through the console...true? Options and ideas wanted cause i really don't have the bucks for a new gaming pc. Thanks

You can build decent 1080p PCs for under...
Well first of all it depends on the console you are talking about with putting a USB full of movies into it and playing them. The PS4 plays MKV, MPEG2 & MPEG4, AVCHD, and AVI movie files. Not sure about the XBone. Also, the USB needs to be in FAT or exFAT format. It will not be recognized on NTFS. Again, not sure about the XBone.

With that said, are you comfortable with using a controller for gaming or do you prefer gaming with a keyboard and mouse on the PC? I never liked the controller style of gaming having grown up on PC keyboard & mouse gaming. Finally, a console is a lot less expensive for 1080p gaming and you can take it anywhere as well as use it to play movies of course. I have both PC and console, although I only use my PS3 & PS4 for racing games and have wheels for them.

If I had to choose, I'd choose going with a console (PS4), even knowing it costs $50/yr for a membership to game online.

You can build decent 1080p PCs for under 700$.
I've always preferred PC since there's
1 - No Xbox Gold/PS Plus subscription
2 - You can use any controller you desire (even wii remote)
3 - Flexibility to upgrade down the road
4 - Sales everywhere (Steam, GOG, HumbleBundle, etc)
5 - Easier Multitasking
6 - And so on

Consoles have their advantages too:
1- Very lightweight, hence portable
2 - Easy to configure and use, perfect for relaxed couch gaming
3 -

It all depends on your lifestyle.
Do you prefer options and flexibility or Simplicity?
Do you travel often?
Do you invite people at your house?
Etc.
