Hi,

I'm currently trying to play F1 Challenge 99-02 on my PC but there appear frame drops and frame time spikes which makes playing impossible. It occurs every 10-30 seconds and is really infuriating is FPS are vital in a racing game. I know it's old but it's working fine except for the frame drops. They did not occur on my old rig from 2005. Even lowering the quality and resolution didn't help. Does anyone know what causes this?

Rig:
Athlon 860K 3.7 GHz
MSI R9 380 2G
8GB 1600MHz Ram
Windows 10

Greetings

I have to agree, with above. you need to research online many times folks make patches to allow the game to properly play on modern systems. Games from that time period worked on vastly different GPU's, Windows versions, DirectX versions especially, etc.

Right click on the main executable (and others in the game's folders if applicable) and set the compatibility mode to the OS that was prevalent at the games release. Everything XP and older will flag the application for AdditiveRunAsHighest (Administrator) and flag ElevateCreateProcess (amongst other things), this fixes older programs inability to understand the NT 6 LUA privilege system.

Occasionally just flagging the application to always run as administrator can make a huge difference.

Screen resolution can also cause issues with certain GPUs and screens, try changing it to non-native ones. You can force applications to run in 640x480 through Windows if things aren't quite working, you can also reduce bit-depth. These might not help though, usually for much older programs.

There are more advanced techniques available through the Application Compatibility Toolkit, but there are way too many options to go through. A lot of DX and other options in there.
