I just bought a new switch so I could network a room to work in. I terminated all the ends to four cables (which I tested so the cables are okay). One going to my PC, my Xbox, printer, and a spare.

First, I unplugged my modem and switch.
Second, I plugged in the modem and waited until it was ready.
Then I turned on the switch with the four cables and one from modem.

I got on my computer and the internet was working great (120MBs down, 14MBs up) so I tried my Xbox which connected fine. After a couple minutes both connections went out. There were still green lights on the switch indicating the connection to 1000mbs devices. A few minutes later it came back up for a short time and same thing when I reboot PC and Xbox.

What am I missing? I looked at the instructions and watched a YouTube video, and I shouldn't have to configure anything. It should be ready out of the box.

Switch: TP-LINK TL-SG108E 8-Port Easy Smart Switch

You can't plug a modem into a switch. You need a router if you want to share the internet from a modem. From the point it comes from a router, that can go to a switch.

A router takes a modem signal and hands out IP address and handles routing and is generally thought of as a smart device. A switch basically just splits out a signal, but without a router in the mix to hand out the IP's, then things are going to conflict, time out, etc.
