Computer won't start when I plug in the CPU Fan on my motherboard, it only starts up without it.

Alright so I have a bit of a problem and am kinda new with tinkering on this stuff. I just got a new video card after seeking help from these forums previously and it does seem to run well. I got the EVGA GeForce GTX 750 Ti and I've been having some trouble installing it, the card itself is fine but my problem is with the CPU fan.

Whenever I start my computer it can only start if I don't have the "CPU FAN" plugged in and that was fine before on my other video card but I noticed when I deleted my old NVIDIA drivers and got rid of my card and then replaced it with this new one my BIOS keeps reporting a "CPU Fan error" but when I do plug in the CPU FAN suddenly the computer doesn't even start at all.

I even did something that felt a little risky where I had the computer on and then tried to plug the PSU wire into the CPU FAN while the computer was still running and then suddenly there was a spark and the entire computer shut down.

My motherboard is M3A78-EM

My CPU is the AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 905e Processor 2.50 GHz

I have a EVGA 500W Power Supply.

My CPU fan temperature according to a program called "Speedfan" is around 50-60C I don't know whether that's fine or not. I don't really feel like burning anything down right now so I hope the CPU at least shuts down if it does go overboard, it does do that right?

Can anybody help me with this problem I am having so I can finally play some Skyrim?

BAD BAD BAD! I dont mean to yell but trying to plug something in while the pc is running is very very bad. You will be lucky if you didnt fry something. Now for the issue, if you can get the pc to boot and use the onboard video, i would boot up the pc and see if you can find a bios update maybe for the mobo. Also are you sure you are plugging the cpu fan into the right spot? 50-60C is ok it wont burn down at that temp im running the phenom ii x6, the phenom can take alot. Yes if your pc gets to hot it will shut itself down, you want to avoid that.

Yes I understand, I will avoid that from now on.

Also I am plugging my wire into the 4-pin slot that says "CPU FAN" near it and there is another plug near the CPU that is already connected to the 3-pin slot called "PWR FAN".

By onboard video do you mean just starting the PC without any graphics card and just using whatever the motherboard has?

Yeah onboard would be the vga that the motherboard has. It sounds like you have the fan in the right spot then, just not sure why its freaking out when you plug a card into it. You could also try plugging the card into another port on the board and see if that has any effect.

Yeah it's weird alright my old video card had the same issue with the cpu fan causing it the computer not to boot but I never had the "cpu fan error" message popup on bios with that one so that's why I always ran the computer without it plugged in.

I thought it was a low power supply issue. I unplugged the video card and just kept 1 RAM running to see if that would help the issue and make the CPU FAN run but still the same issue occurs.

Whatever I'm at work right now but I'll move the video card to another slot as well as search for a bios update, hopefully won't end up bricking my pc by doing something stupid...
