I have a GTX 970 G1 Gaming Edition GPU and I've been wanting to overclock. Basically, I'm a noob at this and really don't want to <mod edit> up... I looked up a ton of guides on overclocking my GPU but really don't wanna risk anything.

GPU: GTX 970 G1 Gaming Edition
CPU: Intel Core i5 4690K
Motherboard: ASUS Z-97 A
Memory: 16GB (8x2)

Please watch the language. Thanks.

The GTX 970 and all the major tweaking utilities have safeguards in place that make it very difficult to set things beyond what the card can handle. So long as you stress test the overclock and keep an eye on thermals, adjusting case cooling and GPU card fan profiles accordingly, you should be fine. I'm pretty sure you'll be fine as long as you don't burn the card up by not paying attention or getting crazy with the voltage. I'd recommend using MSI afterburner, as it seems to be a more complete tweak utility than the ones offered by Gigabyte and ASUS.

Its easy, and you can't really break anything using Afterburner.
Follow this video.
If you want to be safe, don't increase your GPU voltage (the first bar you'll see) Try to get the best Core Clock and Memory Clock speed. Slowly increase them until you crash. You can use the GPU benchmark that comes with Afterburner for a test.

You might not be likely to immediately break anything using Afterburner, but you can still cause damage if you don't pay attention to thermal conditions. I also don't see any mention of your power supply model, which should be your primary concern when using a discreet graphics card and especially when overclocking it. What is your PSU model number?

The PSU model number is 110-B1-0750-VR
Here is the exact PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438025&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-PCPartPicker,%20LLC-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

Definitely not one of the better power supplies around and I can almost guarantee that under high duty cycles like it's likely to see in a gaming machine, especially when overclocked, it won't last terribly long. Still, it might be ok for a while.

I'd recommend configuring a middling overclock, if any, and leave it at that until you have a better power supply. For your intended usage, or for ANY discreet gaming card that requires supplemental power, we highly recommend using only Tier 1 or 2 units, so that would be a good thing to start thinking about. Capacitor selection of the secondary caps on that unit is not great, using Chinese caps rather than Japanese ones like it has on the primary cap. 12v voltage regulation on that unit was not great either.

Well I took the overclock off... but now I'm getting worse performance in my games than I usually get when my GPU isn't overclocked... Is there any solution to this?
