In short you can upgrade your CPU if it's a model that is not soldered onto the motherboard.
However there are several things to consider. First of all the technical part: TDP must match, socket must match, DDR support must match.
Now for the common sense part: Any upgrade will have minimal impact on performance ( 10% at most). Any upgrade attempt may result in damage if done by someone unskilled with laptop MB's.
Paying for the operation is not worthwhile.
Laptops are used for mobility and not performance so if you use your laptop on a desk with mall bought desk coolers connected to your usb port, while using usb expansions for any other gadgets you might not need a laptop at all.

To be short. Don't ever think about it.

1.because the cpu in a laptop is usually soldered onto the motherboard
2.buying a new cpu is almost impossible because no one really sells them
3. you can't simply put this socket back in, because laptop cpus vary in size and are not like the desktop versions

Well I beg to differ. You can upgrade your CPU, man. Here is one option:
http://ark.intel.com/products/35563/Intel-Core2-Duo-Processor-T9600-6M-Cache-2_80-GHz-1066-MHz-FSB

I suggest taking a stroll over to Ebay. You will find roughly a million people all over the world who are not only making it possible to buy new CPU's [and used ones too], but are also selling them dirt cheap in order to beat the next guy to a sale. The link I posted to the T9600, you can find em for about $15 to $25 bucks, right now, all day long.
Good day to you

Here man, follow this tutorial on youtube:

and remember- Google is your friend. For something like this next time maybe type "upgrade toshiba c605 CPU" straight into the browser address bar and see what comes up. Good day to you

You can always change or replace the CPU on any laptop. If it is soldered you will need proper equipment and unless you know what you are doing, I don't recommend adventuring on this. If it's not soldered you can change easily but only put a CPU from that specific line of CPUs and your's being so old and outdated, will not see any benefit hence they are not that good any way on that line.
