you can't really look at gpu's based on any number. this chart is more meaningful:http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html
if you are looking to buy one, first decide on your budget, from there you'd get a card each from nvidia and amd. you could choose either one and it would not make a huge difference

You can't look at any of those on their own without considering the video chip in the card.

An old card with 2 gig of RAM will be worse than a new card with 1 gig of RAM, an old high power card will not be as good as a new one which may use half the power.

It's like asking what is better in a car, two or 4 doors or having it be yellow or blue. Depends on the car model right? Even if you talk about something like horsepower, a light car will less horsepower can be faster than a heavy car with more horsepower. Need the full picture to get an answer.
