Hello fello forumers,

Here are my specs:

  • 3.2 ghz g3258 (placeholder for a 4790k coming soon)
ASUS Z97 PRO WIFI AC MB
    GIGABYTE 970 4GB
    8 GB DDR3 1866 Kingston HyperX
2x 256 SSDs (Sandisk and Samsung)
    1x 2tb WD Green
    RM750 CORSAIR GOLD+
    BENQ GL2450H 1080p (running at 2k)

Now what I do is I do a lot of photoshop,DW, After effects and stuff. quite a bit of heavy vid rendering.

apart from that, I like to do ULTRA 2K gaming (with g3258!) and just push that lil bitch as much.

Now I need to upgrade ram (Had one more 8gb of same but sold it with my old rig)

I have these three models in front of me:

1) G.SKILL TridentX Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2400 (PC3 19200) Desktop Memory Model F3-2400C10D-16GTX

2) G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2400 (PC3 19200) Desktop Memory Model F3-2400C11D-16GXM

3) HyperX FURY 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model HX318C10FK2/16

I need your help.

I am attracted to the Ripjaws, cause its damn cheap, and has 2400 c11.

Tridents are fairly reasonable to but the price diff. doesn't seem to justify the gains of just 1 latency thingy.

Now Hyperx is about the same price as Ripjaws, but is 1866 c11. BUT I could keep my 8 gb stick and get 24 GB RAM!

I have heard and read many places that 1866 to 2400 diff. aren't substantial...So what should I do?? Sell the 8 gb stick and get one of the G.skills OR get more Kingstons?

Solution
With the Price difference I'd go the RJs, performance gain from Tri's not really worth a 50% price premium. As far as mixing with the old can try, no guarantees when mixing DRAM, but if you try and have problems, give me a shout we can try adjustments, I've been able to mix DRAM successfully lots of times, even with the higher end DRAM

Thanks for a quick reply!

Is the price diff. if I chose to go with Tridents, worth the better perf??
Tri are 99.99 and Rjs are 66.99!

If I go with RJs, can I combine them with my curr. Fury module at least at 1866?

On ram, more trumps speed and timings.
Here is a good article on ram scaling:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/7364/memory-scaling-on-haswell

Your apps, particularly photoshop seem to be able to benefit from lots of ram.
Your motherboard supports 32gb.
You need an os better than windows 7 home to support >16gb.
I suggest buying a 4 x 8gb kit of 2400 speed ram like the low profile g.skil ares:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231674

You will be wanting a decent air cooler for the 4790K( a liquid cooler is not necessary)
I might suggest the noctua NH-D15s high compatibility cooler.
The tall heat spreaders of the tridentX and such will impact some air coolers.
You can remove the fins as I had to do. Such a waste, they were beautiful.

And...
Ram is sold in kits for a reason.
A motherboard must manage all the ram using the same specs of voltage, cas and speed.
Ram from the same vendor and part number can be made up of differing manufacturing components over time.
Some motherboards can be very sensitive to this.
It is particularly difficult when using more than 2 sticks to get them matched.
That is why ram vendors will NOT support ram that is not bought in one kit.
Adding ram is a crapshoot.
Better to buy a tested kit in the first place.

Thanks for the reply.
My board does support 32 gb. I was quite satisfied with 16 gb though. I was thinking I could add the same 8*2 kit if I need in future.

Thanks for that interesting article. I do seem to be fine for now with 16 gigs too though.
I am on Win 10 64 bit Ultimate or the top one. So should be good.

That Ares Ram kit is very attractive, but I am on a budget too
&
I am from India where only the 1866 kits are avail.

I am thinking of getting the RJs from Newegg as the price incl. of shipping and all is just about the same as of 2*16 Fury here locally.

Yep. with cooler for 4790k I am stumped on the budget, Those Noctuas go Extremely expensive locally.
I am thinking of CM 212X , which is really cheap here and will suffice small OCs I think.

Yep got the whole Kit thing.

May be I could get another same dual channel kit in future and it will go well with them hopefully.

Yes. I thought so. So I am getting the RJs 2*8 and may be I can add another kit of the same to my rig later.
So it should work in quad channel I think...?
Thanks
I will definitely let you know if I try some mix n matching. :)

Ohh...so stupid of me :p
I guess 2xdual channel will be just fine if I need it.
