I'd suggest that you check if the SATA to USB adapter has any additional specific driver you need to install. Other than that, go ahead and try it out with a different computer. It would be even better if you could try the adapter with a different drive as well if possible. Unfortunately there's no other way to know what might be wrong unless you try out different options, so I'd recommend that you try that drive with a different computer by connecting it internally via a standard SATA connection and test it, to see if there's anything out of the ordinary.
