Hi guys, this is my first pc build.
Not too sure what I'm doing but I want a pc that is capable of running games at 1440p high settings 60fps. Is 1440p worth it and would this build be capable of it. I would quite like to cut down on the cost a bit but I also want to future proof it to some extent so I don't have to buy new parts anytime soon.

No the GTX960 would really struggle at 1440p. You're not going to be able to cut down on the overall cost since you pretty much HAVE to have a much better video card.

What is your budget? 1440p may not be realistic for you.

This would be a huge step in the right direction

So if I did decide to go for a 1440p build I would need to spend more on a graphics card.. how does the GTX 970 stack up against the R9 390? There's a very small price difference. My budget is flexible but I'm a student so obviously less expensive is better, could probably stretch to £900. Is paying the extra money really worth it for 1440p gaming or would I be better off sticking to 1080p? I know it's preference but those extra pixels seem to be pretty pricey, and tbh I'd rather take 60fps at 1080p over 30fps at 1440p. I'm pretty certain I'm going to want an ssd also..

The 390 is better than the 970 at 1440p. The 4690k is a TERRIBLE choice if you're trying to cut costs. Overclocking doesn't really add any noticeable performance and it's expensive to do. The 4690k + after market cooler + Z97 motherboard is over $100 more expensive than the 4590 + H97.

I think you've convinced me to stick with 1080p hahah, didn't realise it was so expensive. Are you saying the build I have is fine for 1080p but I should choose a cheaper processor?

This is what I recommend for 1080p

Add a ssd if you can afford it.
