I have an old inspiron 531 that i use for 1080p video playback and light web browsing. I recently bought a Dell u3415w ultra wide screen monitor. Now i want to upgrade my graphic card with display out so that i can connect to the dell monitor with native resolution.

I don't want to upgrade the whole computer right now since it's sufficient for light web browsing and 1080p video playback. Which graphic should i get for my dell inspiron 531? Looking for something cheap.

I believe inspire comes with 300 watts power supply
The graphic card slot is PCIe x16 (Graphics): 1 Slots
Dell U3415W native res is 3440 x 1440, 21:9

Thanks

You have a few obstacles ahead of you. Firstly is the age of your system. An Inspiron 531 (you mean 531 and *not* 531s, right?) has a Sempron or Athlon 64. A CPU of that generation might well have trouble pushing that many pixels around. Plus a 300w power supply without any PCIe power connectors further limits you. The most likely candidate would probably be this card

It supports DisplayPort, can work with a 300w power supply and supports 4K resolutions. I have one remaining concern about this card; it is PCI Express rev 3.0 and your motherboard only supports PCI Express rev. 1.0. I'd also feel better if it specified DisplayPort 1.2 in...

I'd also feel better if it specified DisplayPort 1.2 in the specs, but I think this is your best bet to get that new monitor working with your old system.

Thanks for the input.. i did some research and looks like PCI express 3.0 will work on PIC Express 1.0 slot. EVGA geforce gtx 750 ti 2gb from newegg that you recommend is around $100.. is it a good deal? .. is there any other cards that are cheaper? i want to buy the card this weekend. thanks

That's the best deal on newegg. There is a Zotac on Newegg that's cheaper, but it doesn't specify a maximum resolution, so I'm not sure it would support your monitor. You can check on PC Part Picker to see if there are any better deals, but check the resolution before you buy.

EDIT: Also check for the DisplayPort. Are you sure that monitor doesn't at least have an HDMI or DVI connector?

The monitor does have HDMI 2.0 60Hz but cap at 30Hz over HDMI 1.0
I'm searching now on newegg and noticed that a lot of cards with the resolution that i want for around $50.
Should i just go for HDMI 1.0 30Hz for $50 ? Do you think i'll notice anything (60Hz vs 30Hz) for for viewing 1080p videos and web browsing?
Which one should be the cheapest card if i go with HDMI 1.0 out?

thanks

Theoretically you shouldn't notice a difference, since most video playback (that's what you're interested in, right?) happens at 24 fps or 30 fps. However, I've never personally lowered my refresh rate to 30Hz to try it out. I have *heard* that you will notice some lag or sluggishness when moving windows around on the desktop.

You can go cheaper, but the NVIdia 750 Ti has always been my top suggestion for people with ~300w PSUs. Since you're not gaming, that might not be the best for you. Why don't you post links to a couple of the cards you're considering?

You can try this one:

I've had good luck with my MSI GTX 670, but that's a mid-to-high end card, not a low-end model. My main reservation would be that none of the sub-$50 cards seem to have DisplayPort connectors.

EDIT: Ha, we found the same card. MSI is generally a good brand for video cards, though I've had issues with their low-end motherboards.
