Gradually slowing transfer rates on Linux

So I'm currently running Mint 17.1, but this happens with all the distros I've tried. When transferring a file to a USB stick, external hard drive, other internal disks, and even the FreeNAS server, the file transfers start off nice and fast then gradually slow until they flatten out, usually at less than half the speed. For example, I might end up with 40MB/s on an internal hard drive. Unless this can be solved, I will be switching back to Windows.

Solution
Can't say for certain, but it's probably something to do with a slower drive and write-back memory caching..? For what it's worth, I have Linux Mint and Windows 8 boxes on similar hardware, and the Linux box is faster. I've only seen the behaviour you've mentioned with slow(er) memory sticks - I get a consistent 135MB/s to my external HDD or fast USB 3.0 sticks.
