I'm trying to retrieve an old text editor program and its settings files from an old hard drive. So I've hooked up the old drive to a PC running Windows XP using one of those gadgets with a cable that connects a hard drive to a USB port and has an AC adapter that provides power to the drive.
The connector seems to work OK, because both Windows Explorer and My Computer can "see" the drive, but my problem is that it sees it not as one drive but as five:
I'm guessing that all those separate "drives" are showing up because I may have partitioned that hard drive. But my memory is more than a little hazy, because that drive is from fifteen years ago.
The trouble is that I'm not looking for all those data files, but rather for the program files, that I think should show up in the root drive. I'm now beginning to wonder if I had two hard drives installed in that old machine: one for the operating system and program software, and the other drive for documents and data.
So I'm trying to find a way to get a better look at this drive to see if I can find a partition which contains the program software I'm trying to retrieve.
