Solution
That sure looks like hardware failure. Replacement is just about the only option (and usually replacing the whole thing will be cheaper.

I was afraid of that. Is there anywhere that sells that sort of component direct? Mustek tech support doesn't seem too keen to help, plus the cost of shipping would be over half what I paid for it.

also, what kind of link would I use to have the image itself appear in my original post?

It's usually cheaper just to buy a new scanner, you can find decent ones for $75

And don't actually post the image to the post, it's actually annoying as hell. Link to image is the best way.

It's a wide-format (11"x17") scanner, so either it will cost more than than that to replace or I have been shopping at the wrong places! But I get your point. I thought there was fairly high number of negative reviews for mustek products, went for it anyway... oh well, I'll keep my eyes peeled for a wide-format in my price range. Thanks for the input.

Are greyscale lamps available? If the greyscale scans on this one didn't have the same problem, I would just keep using it, at least for now.

oh, and maybe I'll try to put that 100 000$ scanner on layaway :D
