I believe I have a system bottleneck, which I suspect is due to my cpu, but I'm not sure. I looked up benchmarks for the GTX 980 and it should not be this low.

Fire Strike 1.1
Score: 5374
Graphics Score: 6314
Physics Score: 5673
Combined Score: 2448

My questions: Where is my bottleneck? And what should I upgrade it to?
note: system to be used for gaming and desktop applications - zero to minimal workstation use.

System Specs:
Gigabyte H77M-D3H (mobo)
CM 550w GXII (psu)
i5-2400 @3.10 Ghz
GTX 980
8GB ddr3 @1333 Mhz

Solution
I've found the problem. Although the EVGA OC Scanner gave me stable results, my overclock was causing the GPU to automatically downclock to avoid damage when running 3D Mark Fire Strike. Turning all settings in the EVGA PrecisionsX software back to default and restarting seems to have solved the issue.

The score is no double what it was.

power supply is suspect, try with another one

or try the gpu in another system, you should be getting almost double that score
