So, we have had this Verizon router (Actiontec M424WR) and the WiFi signal has been pretty bad. So we went out, and we were told that this Netgear Nighthawk (AC1900) would improve the speed and range. The only issue is, the Actiontec router seems to get internet access via an Ethernet cable plugged into the WAN port, but there is only a coax on the Netgear. I've tried plugging in everything the same (minus the Ethernet cable that was plugged into the WAN port), and neither the WiFi nor the LAN provided internet access on the Netgear. So, is there an adapter or something that can conversation the Ethernet into Coax?

Thanks in advance,
Dawson

I'm certainly no expert, but of the two nighthawks I've owned, neither had a coax connection. The coax usually only goes to a modem so I'm assuming you picked up a modem/router combo and ..well.... I suppose beyond that you'll have to contact your ISP to see what kind of connection you should be using. If from the wall you only have an ethernet cable, then somehow there is a modem inline somewhere else. If that is the case, then you probably need to replace the router/modem combo with JUST a router and go from there.

Do not get rid of the modem you were using before. It is probably also used for telephone and will need to be plugged into coax. It also likely is a combo meaning that it is also a WIFI router. Connect to the WIFI from your router and run a command prompt in windows or a terminal in OSX or Linux. For windows, type ipconfig and for Mac or Linux type ifconfig. Look until you find the number for your default gateway, usually something like 192.168.1.1 or 10.0.0.1. Type the number exactly into a browser and you will log into the router's settings. Then, turn off the WIFI on the modem. There will likely be a username and password for the modem, usually admin and password by default although you can google your individual router if you can't get in. After that, plug the nighthawk into the modem using ethernet. The nighthawk will get internet from the modem for WIFI and by turning off WIFI on the modem, you will not have conflicting networks.
