Is it possible for me to use a mini PCIE adapter with the HP Pavillion 550-a114 and then install an external graphics card. I heard the Pavillion is basically a laptop in a case. So would I be able to use the adapter and use a better graphics card.
Just checked on mini-PCI Express, and as I thought it only supports x1 (one lane) of PCI Express bandwidth. That's 1/16 of the bandwidth available to a regular PCI Express x16 (sixteen lane) slot. Translation: It'll be really slow compared to an internal GPU, regardless of which graphics card you choose.
If so, it'd probably be cheaper to buy a new PC. Also, external GPUs usually can't get the same performance out of the GPU as a desktop rig, due to the fact mini-PCIe interfaces are usually a fraction of x16 bandwidth.
your problem will be the types of external cards you can use is limited by the USB3.0 plug. If you had a firewire port i could point you to a lot of improved GPUs over what you have. But with USB3.0 being the limit, I don't think any external drive will be good enough to be an improvement over what you have.
He's thinking you're going to use a USB 3.0 external GPU. You did say mini-PCIe, right? Personally I've never heard of a firewire external GPU. I would be interested in learning more. Perhaps he means Thunderbolt?
USB, which runs through the system's southbridge is WAY TOO SLOW to support even a low end gaming gpu. thunderbolt runs through the system's northbridge just like PCI-E does.

So basically I'm stuck having to get a new computer, unless there is an other way to upgrade my graphics card, I'm either forced to stay with this or buy a new one...

As you noted initially, that is basically a laptop in a case.
You can't do much to upgrade it.
