THIS IS NOT A TRADE OFF NOR A COMPARISON. the question at hand is the following, if given the chance to get 2 x5670 core xeon ( hex core 2.93 stock frequency) and 8 gigs of ram(DDR3) for FREE. would it be worth it to build a DUAL PROCESSOR rig based on the setup,? AND HOW WOULD IT FARE against current gaming rigs, a skylake i5 for instance(a stretch i know but still realistic enough not to compare it to an i7 XD)?
is it cost effective to get a motherboard and gpu for it?(got the rest laying around , ssd, psu and casis).
i'm not currently planning to make a desktop, but if this proves to be cost effective, i would look into it,
other possible Dual setups are with xeon E5620 and xeon E5420 .
what do you suggest fine citizens of the pc masterrace?

It happens that the Xeon X5670 is a really good dual CPU Xeon. For some reason, that particular Xeon can have higher scores than other CPU's of the same speed.

However, the 6-cores @ 2.93 /3.33GHz is going off the mark for gaming. For gaming the single-threaded is the key and on Passmark the X5670 single- threaded scores 1355, while a Skylake i5-6600 is 2121.

Much of the equation though depends on the budget. I suggest taking the budget for total expenditure and subtraact the possible value the X5670 system is worth. If that's a Dell Precision T7500 with two 6-cores, it might be worth quite a bit- perhaps $500-700 depending on the other parts.

That may be enough to fund the new CPU and motherboard, but there will still be a good amount that needs to be added.

You might do some searches on Ebay by CPU- which I suggest might be 4th generation i7. How about:

NEW!! Dell OptiPlex 7020 (500 GB, Intel Core i7-4790, 3.6 GHz, 8 GB) PC Desktop sold for $402 on 1.28.16

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Dell-OptiPlex-7020-500-GB-Intel-Core-i7-4790-3-6-GHz-8-GB-PC-Desktop-/371537892433?hash=item5681625451%3Ag%3A%7Eq8AAOSwuYVWoTNi&nma=true&si=v3IfjTqZP5jN5Xvss6NiUrTyw38%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

In my view, the i7-4790 is an extremely good CPU that should be up to speed with the right GPU. the single threaded performance is 2073 as compared to the i5-6600 at 2121. That's not an important difference and buying all new stuff is going to cost a lot more.

If the free Dual Xeon is worth $400, than the Optiplex is more or less free and you can add a used GTX 760, SSD- $60-80 and whatever, and have very competent gaming system. And, there's no assembly required- just a couple of plug in components. The one in that listing might even be under warranty.

I've been buying used workstations and upgrading them the last several years and find that I can have a very good performing 12-core system with a lot of RAM for about $50/year or less. The key is careful shopping.

@BadActor , yep kinda got my hopes up!
@bambiboom SPOT ON MY FRIEND, real nice thorough review, though i only need to worry about gpu and MB as i already have the rest( among which 850 evo 250gb), i could also snap a free nvs quadro 420 or 460 (i know they're not much) but if i got what you said right, then the build would be extremely cost effective but not quite competitive or even close to it gaming-wise.
best option is still to sell the suckers then figure out what to do with hard cold cash. buncha thanks!
