Hi, I have a fairly large house, and i am wanting to upgrade the internet that is hardwired within my house. I have a 100 Mbit internet connection, and the wires that are installed are 10 Mbit. Would it be worth it to upgrade to Gigabit Ethernet? or would wifi extenders be a better option. I have very thick walls, so wifi does not work terribly well without many extenders. I have ran tests over the current ethernet, and over my 802.11AC wifi. my wifi gets about 24 mbits, and the Ethernet gets about 9.8. would i see noticable wired speed increases with gigabit?

Solution
Not sure what kind of wire you have that only runs 10m. Almost everything runs 10/100 even on fairly old technology wire.

Extenders should always be your last resort. You use them when any signal at all is better than nothing. They greatly degrade the quality of the signal because they are transmitting a interfering signal back into the same radio channel. You will lose at least 50% and if the signal levels are low already you lose even more.

Nothing compares to ethernet. Once they are installed and function you pretty much never need to worry about them again. Wireless is always subject to random interference. You should easily be able to use your 100m internet connection with no issues if you install gig cabling...

And if you ever need to say copy data from device to device within your house you can run at the full gig speed.

Of course the huge downside to ethernet cabling is getting installed in the walls etc.

Solution

Well you may have CAT3 wiring.

Is 10 Gig worth it?
As anything else, "worth it" is in the eyes of the beholder and your accountant.

Quick answer: Consensus here say, right now, Feb 2016, NOT WORTH IT.

Longer answer: Hey, I have no idea how much you make or how many acres you got there. Very simple, lets say you need 1000 ft bulk CAT cable, go into the web, see what's the price differential between CAT6 (1 gbit home less than 5,000 SQ feet), CAT6a (larger than 5,000 SQF), and CAT7 (10 gbit) cost you, THEN you make the decision. Installation cost should be all the same.

Be aware CAT7 is not fully yet ratified, by the time it does, you run the risk of wiring something now that may or may not be compatible with the final standard.

The other option is to install CAT6 now with CONDUIT and you will be able to pull the next gen cabling later wo tearing walls, but of course (you knew there is no free lunch) the conduit will increase cost of installation.
