Internet and sound both cut out for a split second when under stress.

Hello! So, earlier this afternoon I downloaded the VPN SoftEther, attempted to use it, and after screwing around with it for a bit and not getting it to work how I wanted I uninstalled it. Shortly after I uninstalled I was listening to music and webbrowsing when I lost connection to my router and my sound was muted, only for a split second. I did some routine checks and didn't notice anything off, so I ignored it and went on. I then tried to download a file (using chrome), and the same thing happened a few seconds after I began the download. The download stopped for the duration of the internet being out, and then restarted, then stopped again, then restarted. This continued until my connection was lost (the little yellow triangle popped up over my network settings), which I fixed by quickly running the windows troubleshoot tool. Once I had internet back, "the sound and internet cuts out" problem started again. I went through the entire aforementioned process several times, until my internet stopped working altogether. Now it says I'm not connected to the router.
I've run a virus scan which didn't detect anything, and everything was working fine until I used the VPN. I honestly have no idea what the problem could be. I've spent the last hour reading through different forums trying to find people with the same problem, but with no luck, so I'm posting here. I don't know if this is the right category as I have no idea what is causing the problem.

Just went back and reread the postings.

The Event Viewer Logs are cumbersome and it does take some time to get a sense of them and what they indicate and can tell you.

Doubt that problem has anything to do with VPN as you "nuked the hard drive and reinstalled". Unless you restored from a clone or image all the VPN configuration etc. should be gone.

Take a look at the physical network connections involved: what about the USB ethernet adapter- can you test it on another PC? Or try another adapter on the problem computer?

Also check your ethernet patch cables, any permanent cables via patch panels, and RJ45 wall outlets going to the problem computer. Look at the router's logs.

Could well be a physical failure in the computer -...

Open Event Viewer and look through the logs there. Start running things and watch what, if anything, appears in the logs.

Look for red and yellow icons. Errors especially. You can right click an entry for more details.

See what you can find.

You can also use the Performance Monitor to observe your system. See if some process starts grabbing all the CPU. Or memory gets taken up and not released.

Note: since my last post I have completely wiped my hard drive and reinstalled windows 10. Still having the exact same problem. None of the other PCs on the network are having the problem, and it persists no matter what cable or port I use.

I am using a USB Ethernet Adapter.

I looked through the event viewer after I ran into the problem a few times, and I really don't know what I'm looking at/looking for. There are no extra errors or warnings after the internet crashes. Also there are no RAM/CPU usage spikes when the internet crashes. To get the internet to crash without actually downloading anything I'm just using a speedtest site. I will make it about 3 seconds into the download part of the test and the internet will crash.

I think the problem is with my computer as it isn't happening anywhere else on the network. I have completely nuked my hard drive and reinstalled (I needed to do this anyway, just used this as an excuse) and that didn't fix anything.

Is it possible this has anything to do with the VPN I tried to use? I can't think of anything else.

UPDATE: Okay so I plugged the adapter in to one of the non USB 3.0 ports on my PC, it had the problem once, but I have been fine since. I've used the adapter for about a month in the USB 3.0 ports and it's supposed to be compatible. I think I've fixed it, but I would still like to figure out what the problem originally was.

UPDATE2: Nah never mind it's broken again. Same thing on all ports.

Could well be a physical failure in the computer - maybe heat related.

In any case, you need to work through a careful step by step process to eliminate each possiblity one by one. Only change one thing at a time.
