Hi, Everyone,

I am in the process of upgrading my computer, built in 2013. The current build:

Intel Core i5-3450 3.1GHz Quad-Core Processor

MSI Z77A-G43 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard

G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1333 Memory (16 GB)

EVGA GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Superclocked Video Card

EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

Asus DRW-24B3ST/BLK/G/AS DVD/CD Writer

Enermax ECA3280A-BL ATX Mid Tower Case

I also have two SSDs that run Windows 7 x64 and x86, and two HDDs that serve as on board storage and three 24-inch BenQ GW2450 monitors. The PSU and Case are around 4 months old, so I will be keeping them, and I am--and plan to continue using--Windows 7 for the time being. My memory is also still in good shape, so I'm likely going to leave it alone. My plan is to upgrade the processor and mobo, thus:

Intel Core i7-4790 3.6GHz Quad-Core Processor

Gigabyte GA-Z97X-GAMING 7 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard

and I'll be adding a proper cooling fan for the processor. Or that's the plan.

Where I am hung up is on the Video Card. Though I am no kind of gamer, I do use this computer for work, which includes a lot of video creation and editing. And, as I mentioned, I have three monitors that I need to be able to use without a lot of muss and fuss. I am looking at the GTX 960s for the price, but would not be averse to getting a GTX 970.

Do these sound like good choices? Any advice--on all of he additions, but especially on re. the video card--would be greatly appreciated.

I would grab a used i7 3770, 3770k, 3770s, or Xeon e3-1230v2 and stick with the Z77 for now. A new 960 or 4GB 380 would be a huge upgrade if you're running 3 monitors. A GTX970 is very expensive for somebody that doesn't game. That psu is not very good so don't be surprised when it craps out a lot sooner that you expected.

Hmm... CTurbo, that sounds like a really good idea, since my motherboard seems pretty happy, but... can you make any suggestions for another (ideally Nvidia video card? Truthfully, the 750 Ti and I have not been friends: it has a habit of crashing, even with the several different driver changes and though it always recovers, so far, the scan I ran a day or so ago (courtesy of UserBenchMark--and please feel free to tell me if they aren't all they claim to be) indicates that it is not really running up to snuff and may not have long to live.

smorizio, thank you, but, I'm looking at the Haswell because I've read that Skylake will only support Windows 10, which I have no intention of upgrading to (again). It is entirely too fond of eating programs I actually need.

Truthfully, I'm looking seriously at taking on Linux for day-to-day use, while still trying to figure out how to use some of the programs I use on 7 and either won't be able to get or see no good reason to re-buy, once this poor thing gives up the ghost. But, considering the cost savings, and the fact that my current motherboard really does seem to be doing okay, I may go with CTurbo's suggestions and save myself some money and aggravation.

Thank you, CTurbo... I picked your initial answer as my solution, but will be checking out the links you supplied... and just realized that I completely mis-read your comments in the first post about the 960. Sorry about that; I hate being redundant.

Thanks to everyone!
