I currently have an FX6300 and wanted to upgrade to an 8-core FX processor because of my budget (I'm a broke college student). I know that the processor is aging, but I still want to get it. The only problem is that on the ASRock website, it states that one should use a top-down cooler on the FX8350 with the 970M Pro3 motherboard I have. I currently have a Cooler Master Hyper D92 on my FX6300, and have been issues finding suitable top-down coolers that are decently priced that would fit over my Corsair Vengeance RAM.

Would my current cooler do the job? Or if not, what are some recommendations as to what I should do? My case is the Corsair 350D, and I have all the fan positions filled with High Airflow 140mm fans (except the back, which has a 120). I'm thinking that the case fans would help keep the board cool, as that is my understanding as to why the board needs top-down is because of the power management.

I'm pretty good at all this stuff, just really been scouring the web for a while now and can't seem to find anything but the Noctua NH-C14S, which is pretty much out of my price range.

Thanks!

I was looking to stay with AM3+, so that I don't have to swap out a bunch of parts in my PC. I was hoping to stay with my current heatsink, the Hyper D92, but the ASRock support page for the motherboard states that I should "please use a cooler with a top-down design". It would be mostly for gaming, and I figured that the higher clock and additional cores would give a performance gain.

The problem with that cooler is that it doesn't blow top-down, and I believe that the cooler I already have is better

Whats your budget?

I was hoping, if I needed to buy a new cooler, to spend around $50 or less. Do you think that my current cooler would be able to do the job?

I think it will. I though you just wanted to cooler replaced.

No, I'm good with the cooler I have, I was just worried that I would need a top-down one because of what the ASRock page said. I would contact them, but their support is down for the Lunar New Year.

No, you definitely don't need a top down cooler.
