So some time ago I purchased all my parts and assembled my computer, I was using anj ASUS H97M-E motherboard however after looking around recently it seems like the Z97 is highly recommended for my processor, i7 4790k.

I'm not sure why, I'd be grateful if somebody could explain the benefits. I've used the H97M-E for overclocking via the bios and achieved a jump from 4Ghz to 4.36Ghz which is really good.

Solution
There's very little difference in the two chip sets, I think Z97 is better suited for overclocking and offers an extra PCI-E lane, that's about it.

Okay thank you, going to save myself £131 pounds then.

I have no need for an extra PCI-E Lane and the overclock I currently have is perfect.

From a previous build I learnt that the hard way.

Just some infos:

If you have a broken motherboards, bought a new one and need a new license (due to OEM version issue).
Before you buy a new license, you should give people from Microsoft support a call and try your luck, perhaps you can convince them to reactivate your license.

In certain countries, you will get your reactivation even if you buy a complete new rig, you just have to do the reactivation by phone call.
There, the license limitation of the OEM is luckily against the local law....you just have to make the phone call.
I dunno about UK tho'.
Be sure you prepare the needed documents like your Windows buying receipt, etc. before you make the phone call.
