Hello people,

My laptop shuts off randomly and restarts itself when on AC Adapter,
This happens mostly while typing.

I checked everything and my conclusion is that i'm facing a MoBa issue.
Can someone confirm it?

When it started:

A friend opened the laptop case to apply new thermal paste, the issue started two days after.

What is happening:

Laptop shuts off and restarts randomly , mostly when playing games or during lenghty typing

Only way to prevent it:

Use the laptop on battery only

What i tried to troubleshoot:

Reseated RAM
Cleaned the laptop
Reinstalled OS
Updated BIOS
Bought new AC Adapter
Stretched GPU & CPU (Prime95)
Launched Benchmarks
Launched msconfig (no errors found)
Checked temps of CPU (30-45 idle / 50-60 gaming)

Laptop Model:
TOSHIBA Satellite C855 22M (2 years old)

PS: The most crazy thing is that it happens mostly when typing
PS2: It won't shut off if i use it on battery only
PS3: During all those days, it NEVER shut off when IDLE. For instance, if i let it IDLE on a games Menu, it won't shut off.

I'm having this issue since December, PLEASE help me i can't afford a new one, even if i have to in the near future i want to know the issue to prevent it next time.

Thanks for feedback
Best regards

On battery, your power profile will be different.
Set your profile when plugged in to the exact same specs as when on battery.

That might explain most of your symptoms except that failure occurs when typing.
I would not expect typing to generate any significant load, possibly only for spell checking.

Try a stress test using OCCT. It will use a more normal set of instructions than prime95.

No, since the issue started when the case was opened to apply paste, I think the fault lies there.

One possibility is that he applied too much paste which acts as an insulator; it is hard to use too little.
Laptop internals are delicate. possibly, something was moved, like a cooling fan was disconnected.

If you have access to a qualified laptop repair shop, you could have them take a look at it.

On battery, the clock speed, display brightness and other power draw components will be reduced to conserve battery power. If you have a discrete graphics chip, you will be switched to lower power integrated graphics.

All of those would reduce the heat generated that the cooler would need to dissipate.

toshiba health monitor shows fan speed and it seems working fine.

Do you feel air flowing out of the vent? The fins could be clogged. Also, I am with GeoFelt on the idea of double checking the TIM since this is what was last changed. Last, what were the temperatures under 100% load using some sort of stress tester like Prime 95 or AIDA 64? List them in Celsius please.

( Idle in Dota2 Menu)

( During P95)

PS: i can hear the fan making noise (feeling normal)

PS2: not sure though but i launched Dota2 and Spectated a game and it is NOT shutting off. It seems like it happens while typing for a long time. I smashed the keyboard and it didn't shut off..i'm so frustated and confused..

Thanks for all the help though

On a desktop, a properly mounted cooler should be about 10-15c. over ambient.
No doubt, a laptop should be higher.

But, I see that at idle, your temperatures are at 58c. That seems way too high to me.

I just checked on my laptop which uses an admittedly more efficient skylake cpu.
My idle temperatures plugged in show 27c.

Do you get the same results on battery?

My definition of idle was wrong.
I meant idle when in a game . I was just on the games menu and did not play or anything.
My temps when Idle on desktop are 30-40 C
With battery the temps are slightly lower
